The Canadian International School of Shenyang (CISS) is an Authorized IB Continuum World School, with a combination of Canadian curriculum and IB program framework. The school uses textbooks from New Brunswick, Canada, and performs "standardized tests" to make parents more confident in their children's learning progress.
The school is situated in the Qipanshan area, surrounded by beautiful mountain and lake scenery. It has a wide range of sporting facilities, including an outdoor track and field, playground, gym, sporting courts, and skating rink.
The second school we visited was a Canadian school, CISS. When the principal showed us around, I saw their IB school certifications on the wall at the entrance hall, which did make me feel reassured. Their motto, "Where learning comes alive," shows in many ways, including through smart boards in the classrooms, the online parent's platform, and a greenhouse.
I don't know much about the IB program, but the principal was very patient in explaining it to us. For families that relocate from country to country every a few years, she said that the IB system helps consistency in learning. Many famous universities are also willing to admit students with an IB Diploma, especially in English-speaking countries. The IB system sounds very interesting, as its focus is to grow ability rather than simply share knowledge.
One thing that stood out is that non-native English speakers need to take a WIDA English language assessment to see how proficient they are in English. The principal said they did this to help them understand students coming with different language abilities. For children to do the best in their studies, learning the English language is important.
I was impressed by their wide range of events, such as the Poetry Conference and Golf Club. I am interested in having golf training by a professional coach and learning some techniques.
The yellow school bus is very American style and looks quite different from the German ones. Mum said this was convenient and could save her the daily commute time.
CISS was the second school we visited. It was interesting that students who speak the same or similar languages have a weekly club for cultural events and games to celebrate their own culture and cultural diversity. The principal told us that students at CISS are from 25 countries – sounds like a mini UN! That must be the advantage of an international school.
Another thing they have is a student dorm. Boarding students need to follow the schedule, and mobile phones are handed in before bedtime. The principal said that each dorm has an elected Dorm Head and that the anti-bullying policy was a top priority. I’ve never been to a boarding school and wonder what it would be like.
There are over 18 free extra-curricular activities available! Dance, football, drama, STEM, it’s really difficult to make a choice. Build a Lego machine on an iPad? Let’s see!
